New Music is a cornerstone of Brooklyn Youth Chorus’s mission. In addition to providing unparalleled voice training and performance opportunities, Brooklyn Youth Chorus gives singers the opportunity to work directly with composers to develop and create original work. These musical experiences transcend learning notes on a page. In deep collaborations, commissioned artists encourage our singers to be authentic and vulnerable as they co-create magic for the stage.
Brooklyn Youth Chorus has commissioned ten major music-theater works and over 140 new compositions for youth chorus from artists that represent the full diversity of the human experience. This music expands our understanding of what young artists can achieve, inspires and challenges our singers, and shapes the future of our musical culture.
As we plan for our 35th Anniversary, we aim to bolster our New Music Fund, allowing us to invest in new commissions and major new music projects each year. Port(al), set to premiere May 1, 2025, is the first major work funded by this campaign. Support toward this fund extends the reach of our choral theater projects, such as Port(al), by allowing Brooklyn Youth Chorus to record these commissions and tour these innovative productions over many seasons.
